Army seizes 108.8kg cannabis, arrests courier in Kogi

In a significant operation aimed at curbing criminal activities, troops from the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Lokoja have successfully intercepted a major drug consignment and arrested the courier involved.

Major Drug Bust on Kogi Highway

The interception occurred on Monday, November 24, when soldiers deployed to the Agbede Response Area conducted a routine stop-and-search operation. Their target was a Toyota Camry with the registration number DKA 158AU.

The vehicle, driven by Mr. Johnson Ayo, immediately raised suspicions. Authorities noted that a branded Police hat and belt were conspicuously displayed on the dashboard, an act believed to be an attempt to avoid scrutiny.

Discovery of Illicit Substance

A thorough search of the car revealed a substantial illegal haul. Soldiers discovered 10 large sacks containing Cannabis Sativa with a total weight of 108.8 kilograms. The drugs were cleverly concealed within the vehicle and were reportedly being transported from Ekiti State to Obajana in Kogi State.

According to a statement issued by Lt. Hassan Abdullahi, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, this seizure is a critical part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the financial pipelines of criminal networks.

Handover to NDLEA and Broader Implications

The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of action. The statement emphasized that large-scale drug movements like this one financially support networks that often escalate into banditry and other violent crimes in Kogi State and the surrounding regions.

Following the interception, the suspect, Johnson Ayo, and the seized exhibits were promptly handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kogi State Command, for further investigation and necessary legal action. This collaboration highlights the multi-agency approach to enhancing public safety and maintaining a secure environment for all citizens.
