Customs Seizes 166 Wraps of Drugs in Owerri

In a significant drug interception operation, the Federal Operations Unit Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service has made a major seizure of illicit substances in Owerri, Imo State.

Massive Drug Haul Uncovered

The customs operatives successfully intercepted 151 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp, along with 15 wraps of Canadian Loud during routine patrol operations. The seizure occurred on November 15, 2025, marking a substantial victory in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.

According to the Customs Area Controller of the unit, Bishir Balogun, the total weight of the confiscated substances was staggering. The Cannabis Sativa weighed 77,500 grammes, while the Canadian Loud weighed 8,600 grammes.

Intelligence-Driven Operation

Balogun explained that the success of the operation was largely due to credible intelligence and the vigilance of customs officers. The drugs were carefully concealed in a manner designed to evade detection during transportation, but the alertness of the operatives led to their discovery.

"The seizure we are handing over was made possible through the vigilance, intelligence and dedication of our officers and men," Balogun stated in an official release. He emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting national security and public health.

Inter-Agency Collaboration Strengthened

The seized narcotics have been formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Owerri for further investigation and appropriate action. This transfer highlights the strong inter-agency cooperation encouraged by the Federal Government.

"The NDLEA remains the competent authority in handling drug-related matters, and we are proud to work in synergy with them to ensure that justice is served and that such harmful substances are removed from circulation," Balogun added.

The Customs Controller stressed that beyond revenue generation and trade facilitation, the Nigeria Customs Service plays a crucial role in national security by intercepting dangerous substances that threaten societal safety and moral values.

Balogun commended the officers of FOU Zone C for their professionalism and reiterated the service's unwavering commitment to protecting the nation's borders and communities from the devastating effects of illicit drug trade. He also encouraged citizens to provide useful information to support law enforcement operations.
