Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Edo State have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking after intercepting a massive consignment of cannabis sativa weighing over one thousand four hundred and fifty-five kilograms.
Dramatic Chase Leads to Abandoned Drugs
The incident occurred along the Okhokho-ISI community route in Uhunmwode Local Government Area, where NDLEA officers engaged in a hot pursuit of suspected drug traffickers. The chase forced the criminals to abandon two fully loaded Toyota Sienna buses and escape into nearby bushes.
Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed the operation in a statement released to journalists in Benin on Monday, November 17. According to the commander, both vehicles had originated their journey from Okpuje community, known for cannabis cultivation and trafficking activities.
Massive Drug Haul Details
The first intercepted vehicle was a light blue Toyota Sienna with registration number EPE 545 EV, which was found to be carrying an astonishing 666 kilograms of dried cannabis. Shortly after, operatives intercepted a second vehicle described as a dark ash Toyota Sienna bearing registration number ABC 142 CD.
This second vehicle contained an even larger quantity of the illicit substance, with 789 kilograms of cannabis sativa discovered inside. The combined weight of the seizure totaled 1,455 kilograms, representing one of the significant drug busts in the state recently.
Ongoing Manhunt and Strong Warning
While the successful operation resulted in the recovery of substantial drug exhibits, no suspects were apprehended during the incident. The individuals responsible for transporting the narcotics deserted their vehicles and made a hasty escape before arrests could be made.
Commander Mitchell issued a stern warning to drug traffickers operating in the region, emphasizing that the NDLEA is actively pursuing leads and conducting thorough investigations aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.
"The ongoing investigations signify our relentless approach towards eradicating drug trafficking in Edo State," Mitchell stated. "Those who think they can evade the law and exploit our communities through illicit drug trade should think again. We are prepared and committed to enforcing the law with unprecedented measures against harmful substances and their distributors."
The commander reassured the public that the NDLEA remains vigilant in its patrols and operational activities, highlighting the importance of collaboration with local communities to ensure safety and create a drug abuse-free society. He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking, emphasizing that community participation plays an integral role in the fight against narcotics in Edo State.
