The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced plans to conduct medical screenings for 3,000 prospective couples as part of its mass wedding programme. The exercise, which will commence on Monday, June 8, is set to take place across all 24 local government areas in the state.
Deputy Commander General's Statement
Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, the board's Deputy Commander General, made the announcement on Sunday. He explained that the couples, comprising 1,500 men and 1,500 women, will undergo mandatory health screenings to determine their eligibility for the programme.
Collaboration with Health Agencies
The screening is being conducted in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS. Participants will be tested for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype, drug use, and other sexually transmitted infections.
Aminudeen emphasized that all registered couples must report to Hisbah offices in their respective local government areas. He warned that anyone who fails to participate in the screening will be removed from the programme. Only those who successfully pass the medical screening will qualify for the mass wedding.
Government Initiative
The Kano State Government reintroduced the mass wedding initiative under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The programme aims to address prostitution and other social challenges, particularly among young women whose families may be unable to afford marriage expenses.
