In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State have intercepted a massive consignment of cannabis, forcing the involved drug cartel to abandon their vehicles and flee.
The Chase and Interception
The incident occurred along the Okhokho-Isi community route in Uhunmwode Local Council. According to a statement released in Benin, the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, detailed how a dedicated team of officers intercepted two Toyota Sienna buses suspected of moving a substantial quantity of illegal drugs.
Ofoyeju revealed that the vehicles were believed to have originated their journey from Okpuje, a community widely known for its notoriety in cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
A Detailed Look at the Seizure
The first vehicle apprehended was a light blue Toyota Sienna with registration number EPE 545 EV. Upon search, it was found to be loaded with 666 kilogrammes of dried weeds suspected to be Cannabis sativa.
Subsequently, the NDLEA team intercepted a second vehicle, a dark ash Toyota Sienna bearing registration number ABC 142 CD. This vehicle was carrying an even larger quantity, with 789 kilogrammes of the same illicit substance.
The combined weight of the seizure amounted to a staggering 1,455 kilogrammes of cannabis.
Cartel on the Run and Agency's Resolve
No suspects were arrested during the operation. The traffickers reportedly deserted the two buses and managed to escape into the surrounding area after a hot pursuit by NDLEA operatives.
Commander Ofoyeju issued a stern warning to drug traffickers operating in the region, emphasizing that the agency is intensifying its efforts to apprehend those responsible for the illicit trade.
He stated, "The ongoing investigations signify our relentless approach towards eradicating drug trafficking in Edo State. Those who think they can evade the law and exploit our communities through illicit drug trade should think again. We are prepared and committed to enforcing the law with unprecedented measures against harmful substances and their distributors."
The Commander also reassured the public of the NDLEA's continued vigilance and urged residents to be active participants in the fight against drug abuse by reporting any suspicious activities to the agency.
