Ebonyi Ex-Deputy Governor's Father Murdered After Kidnapping, Police Hunt Suspects
The traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Ezeogo Francis Igwe, has been confirmed killed by his kidnappers, according to police authorities. Igwe, who is the father of former Ebonyi State deputy governor Kelechi Igwe, was abducted on Sunday, March 1, 2026, while en route to church.
Details of the Abduction and Murder
Armed men on a motorcycle intercepted the monarch's vehicle, forced him out, and took him to an undisclosed location. Police spokesman Joshua Ukandu stated that Igwe was murdered "a day after he was abducted" on March 2. Security operatives immediately launched a rescue operation following the kidnapping.
Using intelligence and technical support, police arrested two suspects connected to the crime. During interrogation, the suspects confessed that Igwe had been killed and agreed to lead officers to the gang's hideout to recover his remains.
Police Operation and Arrests
When police approached the hideout, other gang members opened fire on the operatives. The police responded with superior firepower, overwhelming the gang. One suspect was killed in the shootout, while the rest fled the scene.
Subsequently, seven additional suspects were arrested, and a locally made pistol was recovered. All suspects remain in custody as authorities continue efforts to apprehend other fleeing members. Ukandu added that "they will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations."
The body of Ezeogo Francis Igwe was recovered and taken to a mortuary for autopsy. The police have intensified their manhunt for the remaining suspects involved in this tragic incident.
