Kebbi University Closes Over Security Threats After Abductions

University Forced to Close Amid Security Crisis

The Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology in Aliero, Kebbi State has taken the drastic step of shutting down its campus completely. This emergency closure affects all staff and students, who have been ordered to leave the institution immediately.

In an official memorandum issued by the Office of the Registrar and signed by Registrar Maimaro Tilli, the university directed all categories of students to vacate the premises. This includes postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, remedial and IJMB students.

The notice gave students only one hour to leave campus following the announcement. The institution's Security Division received orders to evacuate any student found remaining in hostels or other restricted areas on campus.

Security Threats Prompt Emergency Measures

While university officials did not provide an official reason for the sudden closure, sources within the institution confirmed the decision relates directly to heightened security threats currently affecting Kebbi State and northern Nigeria.

The closure comes just days after a tragic incident on Monday, November 22, 2025, when gunmen attacked Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State. During this attack, approximately 24 students were abducted, while the vice principal and a security guard were killed.

One student from the attacked school, Khadijat Lawal, an SSS3 student, recounted the terrifying experience through her father, Malam Lawal Altine. She described how armed men invaded the school premises early Monday morning, forcing students into nearby forests.

Student Recounts Harrowing Escape

Khadijat Lawal shared chilling details of the attack that she says will remain indelibly engraved on her mind for the rest of her life. She and other students were asleep in their hostel when strange voices woke them around 5 am.

"Fear gripped the students as the armed bandits tried to gain access to the hostel," Khadijat recalled. She managed to slip out and hide while listening helplessly as the terrorists moved through different areas of the school.

Her father, Malam Lawal Altine, who has three children enrolled in the school, confirmed his daughter remains deeply shocked by the traumatic experience. The family considers her escape nothing short of miraculous.

In response to the growing security crisis, President Bola Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to Kebbi State. The Vice President's mission includes sympathizing with the state government and reassuring parents and guardians of the kidnapped schoolgirls that the government will work to secure their quick release.

The university closure will remain in effect until further notice, leaving students' academic futures uncertain as security forces work to address the escalating threat to educational institutions in northern Nigeria.
