Nine Sentenced for Abduction of Church Worshippers in Benue State
A court in Benue State has delivered a significant verdict, convicting and sentencing nine out of ten suspects linked to the abduction of worshippers at St. John Catholic Church in Ojije community, Ado Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred during a vigil on Sunday, February 8, 2026, involved the kidnapping of nine victims, sparking widespread concern and a swift security response.
Coordinated Security Operations Lead to Rescue
Acting on credible intelligence, authorities launched coordinated operations that resulted in the safe rescue of all the victims. The initial phase of the operation was spearheaded by the Police Intelligence Response Team, which arrested four suspects and recovered AK-47 rifles along with ammunition. This early success provided a crucial breakthrough in the investigation.
Further Arrests and Key Suspects Identified
Subsequent investigations led to additional arrests, bringing the total number of suspects to ten. Among those apprehended were Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, whose arrests offered vital leads that helped dismantle the criminal network responsible for the abduction. Their involvement was instrumental in uncovering the broader operations of the group.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Following their arraignment, nine of the suspects were convicted and sentenced to varying prison terms, while one suspect remains awaiting trial. The sentencing was confirmed by Engr. Sunny Oche, Chairman of Ado Local Government Council, in a statement issued on Saturday, March 21, by his spokesperson, Aluma Moses. This legal outcome underscores the judiciary's commitment to addressing such crimes decisively.
Commendations for Security Efforts
In his statement, Oche commended the efforts of security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante groups, for their coordinated response. He also praised Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Inspector General of Police, and Deputy Governor Sam Odeh for their roles in ensuring justice was served. Oche emphasized that this outcome reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring public confidence in the region.
