The Nigerian Army has announced significant security developments in Cross River State, where troops have received eight rescued kidnap victims from the Cameroonian Armed Forces and arrested a suspected gunrunner in separate operations. These actions are part of ongoing efforts by the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South-East, under Operation UDO KA (OPUK), to enhance safety in the region.
Rescue and Handover of Kidnap Victims
According to a security update dated January 20, 2026, troops from the 13 Brigade, while on patrol along the Ikang waterways, received the eight victims at approximately 6:16 p.m. on January 18. The handover occurred at the Pastors Fishing Port general area, where the Cameroonian Armed Forces transferred the individuals to Nigerian military custody.
The victims had been traveling from Nigeria to Cameroon when they were abducted by suspected sea pirates along the Cameroon waterways. Following a gun battle between the Cameroonian forces and the criminals, the victims were successfully rescued. Upon receipt, the Nigerian troops conveyed them to a Forward Operating Base (FOB) for debriefing and subsequent release, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Military Commitment to Security
The military high command has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the region. These incidents highlight the collaborative efforts between Nigerian and Cameroonian forces in addressing cross-border security challenges, particularly in areas prone to kidnapping and arms smuggling.
Operation UDO KA continues to play a crucial role in maintaining stability in South-East Nigeria, with troops actively engaged in patrols and intelligence-driven missions to combat threats. The successful handover of victims and the arrest of the gunrunner demonstrate the effectiveness of these security measures in protecting citizens and upholding law and order.
