The Ports Authority Police for the Western Command in Nigeria has rolled out a major security initiative across Lagos State's vital maritime trade routes. This move, announced on 22 December 2025, is designed to guarantee safety and prevent any disruption to port operations throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
Comprehensive Security Coverage for Key Ports
Commissioner of Police Oluwatoyin Agbaminoja detailed the new measures through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Isaac Hundeyin. The strategy involves significantly boosted patrols that operate 24 hours a day, both on land and across the waterways. The goal is to actively discourage criminal acts and protect vessels, cargo, and critical port infrastructure.
The security blanket now covers all major port corridors in Lagos. This includes the Apapa Port, Tin Can Island Port, Lekki Deep-Sea Port, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, and the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal. The marine patrols will extend their coverage up to 12 nautical miles from the coast to secure the approaches.
Collaborative Strategy for Real-Time Response
Recognizing the increased human and vehicular traffic typical of the season, the Command has fortified its alliances. They are now working in closer coordination with sister security agencies, terminal operators, shipping companies, and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs). This enhanced collaboration is intended to facilitate a swift, real-time response to any security issues that may arise.
To manage congestion and potential threats, additional personnel have been deployed to critical and high-traffic locations. Furthermore, intelligence gathering and surveillance operations have been ramped up to proactively identify and neutralize any risks to port safety and the nation's economic assets.
A Call for Public Vigilance
Commissioner Agbaminoja has called on all port users to play their part in maintaining security. She urged the public to remain alert, adhere to all security protocols, and immediately report any suspicious persons or activities. Reports can be made to the nearest Port Police Division or directly to the Marine Unit.
The Command reaffirmed its dedication to preserving safety, security, and order across the maritime domain during the Yuletide and beyond. "The command also remains committed to ensuring that activities within the nation’s maritime domain continue smoothly and securely throughout the season and beyond," the commissioner stated.
