Tragic Airstrike Claims Over 50 Lives at Border Market
A devastating military airstrike has resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people at a weekly market located on the border between Borno and Yobe states. According to multiple sources and eyewitness accounts, the airstrike took place at Jilli market, situated between Gubio Local Government Area in Borno State and Geidam Local Government Area in Yobe State. The market, known for attracting traders from surrounding communities such as Gubio, Chiweram, Benisheikh, Gurokayeya, and Geidam, was bustling with activity when the attack occurred around 2:46 p.m.
An eyewitness reported that at least 56 people were confirmed dead, with 14 others hospitalized at the Specialist Hospital in Geidam, Yobe State. The source described hearing explosions from fighter jets, with four aircraft involved in the operation, though the fourth was not clearly visible. "I counted 56 corpses myself and helped rescue two injured people, taking them to the hospital. I believe the number of casualties may be higher, as more bodies are still being recovered," the eyewitness stated.

Malam Lawan Zanna, the councillor of Fichimaram Ward, confirmed the incident, noting that about 20 people had been admitted to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam. He provided a detailed account, saying, "The incident occurred at Jilli village's weekly market under Fichimaram Ward in Geidam LGA. From the information available to us, it was an airstrike. When the jets launched their attack, people panicked and began to run, but the strikes continued. As we speak, over 30 people have been killed. More than 20 people were hospitalized in Geidam. Two were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu. Out of those receiving treatment, nine have died, bringing the death toll to over 30."
Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (rtd), Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, also confirmed the incident but indicated that it occurred within Borno State. "I have spoken with the chairman of Geidam Local Government, who informed me that Jilli village falls under Gubio LGA of Borno State. You may contact officials in Maiduguri for further details," he said.
