Nigerian Army Captures Notorious IPOB Commander 'Calamity' in Ebonyi Raid
Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully apprehended a high-profile commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) wing, who is notoriously known by the alias 'Calamity'. This arrest represents a significant breakthrough in ongoing security operations across Nigeria's southeastern region.
Details of the Arrest Operation
According to an official statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division Nigerian Army, the operation was conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The military raid targeted a terrorist hideout located in Nwofe, within the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The operation was executed by troops from Sector 2 of Operation UDO KA, who are actively engaged in the broader Operation EASTERN SANITY campaign within Ebonyi State. This coordinated effort led to the capture of five suspects, including the primary target 'Calamity' and four other key members of the IPOB/ESN network.
Connection to Violent Attack in Delta State
The military's action was precipitated by credible intelligence linking 'Calamity' and his criminal cohort to a violent incident that occurred on February 26, 2026. During this attack, which took place at Okuku-Igbo in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, the assailants killed one police officer and seriously injured another.
In the course of that assault, the attackers also seized two AK-47 rifles from the police officers. Following intensified security operations in Delta State after the incident, 'Calamity' and his gang members reportedly relocated to Ebonyi State. They established a new criminal camp there in an attempt to find a safe haven and continue their violent activities.
Evidence Recovered During the Arrest
At the time of his apprehension, the suspect known as 'Calamity' was found in possession of several items that are now being examined as potential evidence:
- A black handbag containing five different mobile phones
- Numerous keys of unknown purpose
- A black Kcsanya motorcycle recovered from the hideout
The suspects are currently in military custody and undergoing thorough interrogation as part of an expanded investigation. Security forces aim to dismantle the wider network of criminal collaborators associated with this group and recover additional weapons that may have been hidden by the organization.
Military Commitment to Regional Security
This successful operation highlights the determination of the Nigerian Armed Forces, working in collaboration with other security agencies, to neutralize terrorist threats and restore peace to affected regions. The military has reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of law-abiding citizens across Nigeria.
The statement from the Army Public Relations office emphasized: "The military reiterates its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and calls on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely information that will aid ongoing operations."
This arrest marks a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat criminal elements and terrorist organizations operating in Nigeria's southeastern states, demonstrating the effectiveness of intelligence-driven military operations.
