Nigerian Army Conducts Solemn Burial for Fallen Soldiers in Borno State
Troops of the Nigerian Army, operating under Operation HADIN KAI as part of the Joint Task Force (North East), have laid to rest soldiers who lost their lives during a recent clash with Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state. The burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri over the weekend, attended by military personnel, government officials, and grieving relatives.
Ceremony Honors Sacrifices of Frontline Troops
In a statement issued by the spokesman of the operation, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the event as a moment of deep reflection for the Armed Forces. He emphasized that while there are moments of victory in military service, there are also solemn occasions that highlight the true cost of defending the nation.
Abubakar praised the deceased soldiers for their courage and selflessness, noting that their deaths represent a significant loss to their families, the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces, and the entire country. He stated, "They endured hardship so that our flag would continue to fly high. Their sacrifices remind us that freedom is not free; it is secured by the steadfast resolve of patriots willing to place duty above self."
Military and Government Pledge Support for Bereaved Families
The commander assured the families of the fallen personnel that the military would expedite the processing of all benefits and entitlements due to the soldiers. He conveyed condolences on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Borno state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Security Trust Fund, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Yabe, sent a message of sympathy to the military and the bereaved families. The governor affirmed that the state government would continue to support both the military and the families of personnel who died in service to the nation.
Attendance and Broader Security Context
The ceremony was attended by senior military officers from the Headquarters Theatre Command and the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, as well as the Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade, the Chairman of Damboa Local Government Area, and other government officials. This event underscores the ongoing challenges in Nigeria's North East, where insurgency persists despite military efforts.
Earlier, Governor Zulum had urged the military high command to launch a fully coordinated offensive across the Lake Chad region to dismantle Boko Haram and ISWAP hideouts, highlighting the need for sustained action to secure the area. The burial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by troops in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
