The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, has publicly commended retired Major General Emmanuel Jebe Atewe, MFR, for his exceptional and distinguished service to the Nigerian nation.
High-Profile Tribute at Funeral Service
The commendation was formally delivered on December 23, 2025, during the funeral service for General Atewe's late elder sister, Mrs. Comfort Atewe. The ceremony took place in Agbor, Delta State.
Representing the Army Chief was a high-powered delegation led by Brigadier General Folu Shonibare. This significant gesture highlighted the deep institutional respect the Nigerian Army holds for the retired general.
A Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship
Speaking at the event, Brigadier General Shonibare described Major General Atewe as a seasoned leader, a mentor, and a role model. He emphasized that Atewe's contributions have left a permanent mark on the force.
"General Emmanuel Atewe served Nigeria in very big and enviable capacities across different platforms of the Nigerian Army, both within and outside the country," Shonibare stated. "His leadership, discipline and strategic insight contributed immensely to the growth and professionalism of the Army."
In a personal revelation, Shonibare credited the retired general as a key mentor in his own career. "From my early days in the Army, General Atewe mentored me. His counsel, discipline and leadership style shaped my career," he added, noting that even the COAS holds Atewe in high regard for his influence on numerous officers.
An Exemplary Career and a Message to Youth
The Army delegation pointed out that many of the strategic positions held by General Atewe during his active service are still considered dream postings and major career milestones for serving officers today.
The solemn occasion also served as a platform to advise Nigerian youths. Brigadier General Shonibare urged young people to embrace the values exemplified by Atewe's life.
"Young people must learn from the life of General Atewe. With vision, discipline and commitment to service, it is possible to rise to the highest levels of leadership," he advised, highlighting the importance of hard work, perseverance, and integrity.
