Army Chief Reaffirms Commitment to Troops' Welfare and Infrastructure Development
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated his unwavering commitment to prioritizing the welfare of troops as a fundamental enabler of operational effectiveness within the Nigerian Army. He emphasized that functional infrastructure directly impacts morale, discipline, and combat readiness across all formations and units, underscoring its critical role in national security.
Infrastructural Projects Commissioned in Ogun State
General Shaibu, speaking through the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, made these remarks during the commissioning of significant infrastructural projects at the 192 Battalion (Rear) in Owode–Yewa, Ogun State. These projects were executed as part of the COAS's deliberate implementation of his Command Philosophy, which is anchored on Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept.
The interventions were strategically designed to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen the Battalion's security architecture, and significantly improve the welfare and living conditions of officers, soldiers, their families, and the host community. This initiative reflects a broader effort to bolster the Nigerian Army's capabilities through targeted infrastructure upgrades.

In his remarks, Major General Babalola expressed profound appreciation to Lieutenant General Shaibu for his visionary leadership, sustained infrastructural drive, and consistent investment in personnel welfare across the Nigerian Army. He also conveyed deepest gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his steadfast support and continued commitment to strengthening national security institutions.
General Babalola noted that the President's strategic guidance and enabling support have created the framework within which transformative initiatives, such as these projects, are being actualized. This highlights the collaborative efforts between military leadership and government in advancing security and welfare objectives.
Project Details and Community Impact
The commissioned projects include:
- Fencing of the Battalion Arms Store to enhance security and accountability.
- Construction of a new Guard House.
- Upgrade of the Medical Reception Station.
- Renovation of the Regimental Sergeant Major's residence.
- Construction of quarters for ten Corporals and Below.
- Installation of a solar-powered water point for the Support Company.
- Establishment of five additional sentry posts to strengthen perimeter security.
- Construction of new Married Officers' Quarters.
Earlier, the Commanding Officer of 192 Battalion (Rear), Major SI Usman, expressed gratitude to the COAS for approving and executing these projects. He explained that the interventions were deliberately targeted at addressing critical security, accommodation, and medical support gaps within the unit, ensuring enhanced operational readiness.
Community Relations and Maintenance Culture
In a goodwill message, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Rev.) Akindele Mathew Sunday, the Olu of Owode–Yewa, conveyed the heartfelt appreciation of the community for the remarkable infrastructural development. He acknowledged the hospital project as a transformative initiative that will significantly enhance healthcare delivery for both military personnel and community members, fostering a harmonious civil-military relationship.
General Babalola commended Major Usman for his diligent supervision, accountability, and prudent resource management, which ensured the successful execution of the projects. He urged the unit to institutionalize a strong maintenance culture to preserve the facilities and sustain their long-term value, emphasizing the importance of ongoing care for infrastructure investments.
The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Brigadier General P Kulawe, Commander of the 49 Army Mapping and Survey Command, representatives of sister security agencies, senior officers, members of military associations, and soldiers of 192 Battalion (Rear), among others, showcasing broad support for the initiatives.
