Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has declared that a strong and continuous partnership with the media is essential for the Nigerian Army. He stated this is critical for shaping public understanding of military activities within the nation's security framework.
Strengthening Ties in a Digital Age
Shaibu made these remarks on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, while declaring open a three-day workshop. The event was organized by the Directorate of Army Public Relations and the Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information (NASPRI).
The Army Chief argued that public support for military efforts is a strategic necessity across all operational theatres. He emphasized that through collaboration, understanding, and professional, responsible reporting, the media can effectively guide public narrative, especially during internal security operations and crises.
Navigating New Media Challenges and Opportunities
The workshop, themed “Navigating the Evolving Media Landscape: Enhancing Collaboration with Media Stakeholders through New Media,” addressed the dual nature of modern communication platforms. Shaibu noted that the digital era offers the Army a chance to tell its story directly and transparently, showcasing its values and commitment to peace.
However, he also warned of significant risks. “It exposes us to the dangers of misinformation, fake news and malicious propaganda that can affect troops’ morale, undermine operational successes and erode public trust,” Shaibu stated. He stressed that in an era where perception shapes reality, the media's role in countering false narratives and mobilizing public support is paramount.
A Platform for Open Dialogue and Trust
Earlier, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, welcomed participants. She reiterated that the Nigerian Army recognizes the media as a vital partner in nation-building.
Anele highlighted the essential synergy between the military and the press, noting it is crucial for managing public information and sustaining trust in army operations. “We will continue to build bridges of trust by engaging openly, demystifying military operations and enhancing transparency,” she affirmed.
The workshop is designed to serve as a forum for deepening collaboration. It provides a platform for open dialogue, capacity building, and knowledge sharing among army officers, defence correspondents, and communication experts.
