Nigerian Army Denies Providing Cover for Gunmen in Jos Palm Sunday Attack
The Nigerian Army has issued a strong rebuttal to allegations that troops provided cover for gunmen responsible for the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba Community, Jos, Plateau State. The claims, made by a youth leader and circulated on social media, have been dismissed as false and misleading by military authorities.
Official Statement from Joint Task Force
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace clarified that troops acted professionally to prevent what could have escalated into endless bloodshed. Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, the Media Information Officer, detailed that upon receiving a distress call, troops swiftly mobilized to the scene, only to find that the attackers had already fled.
Oteh emphasized, "It is expedient to state unequivocally that at no point did troops provide any form of cover for the terrorists’ elements who carried out the unfortunate attack that claimed the lives of innocent citizens." He added that the troops pursued the fleeing criminals, with many survivors attesting to their efforts.
Investigation and Response Details
The Nigerian Army promptly investigated the allegations and confirmed them to be baseless. Oteh noted that the troops dispatched four gun trucks to the incident scene and acted professionally upon arrival. He warned that such false claims could demoralize troops and cause disaffection between the military and the host community.
This incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, with the Army reiterating its commitment to protecting citizens. The statement underscored the importance of accurate information to maintain public trust and operational effectiveness.
Broader Context of Violence
The Palm Sunday attack in Jos is part of a series of violent incidents in Plateau and Kaduna States. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned these barbaric acts, assuring Nigerians that security agencies are actively addressing the situation to safeguard lives and properties. In a related event, suspected bandits attacked a wedding ceremony in Kahir, Kaduna State, resulting in 13 deaths and multiple abductions.
Police have confirmed the abductions, with officials visiting victims and promising a full report after details are verified. These incidents underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures and community cooperation to combat rising violence in the area.
