Army Clarifies Dismissal of Lance Corporal Olamilekan, Cites Disciplinary Breaches
The Nigerian Army has issued a detailed clarification regarding the dismissal of Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, widely known as "Soja Boi," emphasizing that the action was based on serious disciplinary violations and not for expressing opinions about political leadership. In a statement released by spokesperson Apollonia Anele, the Army confirmed that the dismissal adhered strictly to due process in accordance with military laws and regulations.
Due Process and Disciplinary Violations
Anele explained that Olamilekan's actions constituted clear breaches of established military rules, including the Armed Forces Social Media Policy. Specific offences cited include unauthorised media appearances, commercialisation of his military identity, creation of partisan content, and misuse of the military uniform. These violations, according to the Army, warranted disciplinary action to maintain order and integrity within the ranks.
Refutation of Welfare Claims
The statement also addressed claims made by Olamilekan in a previous interview, where he alleged poor welfare conditions for soldiers, such as receiving no additional benefits beyond basic salary and being required to purchase their own uniforms and protective equipment. The Army strongly refuted these assertions, labeling them as "false, baseless, and clearly intended to misinform and generate unwarranted sympathy."
Structured Remuneration System
Anele detailed that the Nigerian Army operates a structured and transparent remuneration system guided by the Manual of Financial Administration for Armed Forces of Nigeria (MAFA). Under this system, salaries are determined by rank and years of service, with personnel receiving various allowances, including uniform allowances, which are paid directly into their accounts. Additionally, soldiers deployed on operations are entitled to benefits such as Ration Cash Allowance, Habit Allowance, and operational allowances.
Mission-Specific Entitlements
Highlighting the support for troops in operational theatres, Anele noted that personnel serving in missions like Operation HADIN KAI in the North East receive mission-specific entitlements designed to enhance their welfare and effectiveness. This underscores the Army's commitment to ensuring that soldiers are adequately compensated and supported during deployments.
Equipment and Logistics Assurance
Addressing the claims about equipment, the Army stated that it is responsible for providing uniforms, protective gear, arms, and ammunition through established logistics systems managed by dedicated ordnance units. While some personnel may choose to supplement issued kits for personal comfort, such actions are voluntary and do not indicate any systemic failure. The Army emphasized that no soldier is deployed without appropriate protective equipment and warned that false claims could undermine public confidence and troop morale.
