The Nigerian Army has initiated a formal investigation into the alleged extra-judicial killing of a civilian in Maiduguri, Borno State, following widespread social media posts and public outcry. The incident, which occurred on March 22, 2026, involves the death of Abdulrahman Mustapha, also known as Abchin, near the Federal High Court on Polo Road.
Details of the Incident and Initial Response
According to a statement released by Lt-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), the Theatre Command was alerted to posts circulating online alleging that troops shot and killed Mustapha, who was reportedly unarmed and returning from a Sallah visit. The posts accused the military of extrajudicial killing, violations of constitutional rights, lack of transparency, and improper handling of the case, prompting calls for an independent investigation, accountability, and compensation for the family.
Maj-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Theatre Commander of OPHK, has commenced appropriate processes to establish the facts, emphasizing that the allegations are taken very seriously. However, preliminary operational indicators suggest the incident, which occurred at 11:40 p.m., may not be straightforward and could have underlying security implications.
Preliminary Findings and Security Concerns
Lt-Col. Uba revealed that initial findings indicate troops may have encountered individuals consistent with Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) reconnaissance elements or a sleeper cell operating within the Polo community. The assessment is based on several factors:
- The individual allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier's rifle, an action described as indicative of hostile intent and a direct threat to safety.
- Mustapha was found in possession of multiple identification cards bearing different names, including a foreign ID from Niger Republic, suggesting possible cross-border movement, infiltration, or use of a decoy identity.
- He was also in possession of a bottle of Tutolin syrup and several wraps of weed suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
- Two unidentified women accompanying him fled the scene, raising concerns about possible accomplices who are currently at large.
Eyewitness accounts from the community suggest Mustapha's conduct prior to the incident was suspicious, leading to a distress call to the nearest military post. Uba cautioned that these preliminary details remain subject to verification and should not be construed as definitive conclusions.
