The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, and Land Component Commander of Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, has reiterated that sound administration and personnel welfare remain central to the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
Commissioning of New Facilities
Maj Gen Emekah made this assertion during the commissioning of a newly renovated 10 Corporals Below Quarters (CBQ) and a Heroes Memorial Stand at the Headquarters of the 29 Battalion, Nigerian Army, on June 8, 2026. The GOC said the Nigerian Army remains committed to improving the welfare of its personnel, stressing that decent accommodation and improved living conditions are critical to boosting morale, enhancing efficiency, and strengthening the operational effectiveness of troops.
Leadership and Project Execution
He commended the Commanding Officer of the 29 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Irinam Otogo, for demonstrating leadership through the execution of projects aimed at improving the living standards of soldiers under his command. According to Emekah, investments in troop welfare are essential for maintaining a highly motivated and combat-ready force capable of meeting contemporary security challenges.
Earlier in his welcome address, Lieutenant Colonel Otogo explained that the renovation of the accommodation facility was undertaken in line with the mission of the 6 Division and the Nigerian Army's broader commitment to prioritising the welfare of its personnel. He noted that the project was designed to provide a more conducive and comfortable living environment for soldiers, thereby enhancing their well-being and productivity. The battalion commander urged personnel who would occupy the renovated quarters to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance to guarantee its durability and long-term usefulness.
Honouring the Fallen
In addition to the accommodation project, the GOC commissioned the Heroes Memorial Stand situated within the battalion headquarters. Describing the memorial as a fitting tribute to officers and soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the defence of Nigeria, Major General Emekah said the structure would serve as a lasting reminder of the courage, dedication, and patriotism demonstrated by fallen personnel in various theatres of operation. He explained that the memorial was established in compliance with a directive from the Army Headquarters requiring formations and units across the Nigerian Army to erect memorial stands in honour of deceased officers and soldiers whose sacrifices continue to inspire the nation.
