Troops of the Nigerian Army operating in Taraba State have successfully recovered the corpse of a slain soldier and several weapons during an intense search-and-rescue mission. This operation was launched following a deadly ambush on an Army patrol team in the Takum Local Government Area.
Details of the Ambush and Initial Attack
The incident traces back to an earlier attack on soldiers at Tyojande village in Takum LGA, which resulted in casualties. Acting on intelligence provided by local residents from Kufai Amadu on December 17, troops advanced towards the general area of Tyojande where the ambush had taken place.
The Search Operation and Contact with Assailants
During the subsequent search operation, the military personnel made contact with armed elements near Ange village, approximately two kilometres from where the body of the killed soldier was later discovered. Security sources reported that the troops' superior firepower forced the attackers to abandon their positions.
The assailants fled into thick vegetation, using cattle as cover before escaping towards nearby mountainous terrain. A hot pursuit by the troops ensued, leading to significant recoveries.
Recoveries and Continued Search
The determined pursuit yielded the recovery of:
- Two AK-47 rifles
- One additional item
- Three empty magazines
These items were found concealed at different locations within the area. The troops then advanced on foot through Tyojande and Yumga villages, later projecting force to Ande and Nbaume communities, all within the Kufai Amadu axis of Takum LGA. No further contact was made in these communities.
The source confirmed the recovery of the corpse of Late Lance Corporal in the Tyojande general area. The Nigerian Army stated that search-and-rescue operations are ongoing to locate one soldier who is still missing from the incident.
Army's Reiteration of Commitment
The Nigerian Army has reiterated its unwavering commitment to sustaining operations in the region. The objective is twofold: to account for all personnel and to deny criminal elements freedom of action in the area. This incident underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of Taraba State and the military's resolve to confront them.
