Borno District Head Exonerates Military in Civilian Death, Details Incident
The District Head of Molaikura community in Borno State, Alhaji Modu Umara, has publicly absolved the Nigerian military of any alleged wrongdoing in the death of Abdulrahman Mustapha, which occurred in the Polo area of Maiduguri. In a detailed interview on Saturday, Umara provided new insights into the events leading to the fatal shooting, emphasizing that reports indicate Mustapha attempted to disarm soldiers while being escorted for further investigation, resulting in an accidental discharge of the firearm.
Suspicious Behavior and Community Apprehension
According to Umara, the incident began when Abdulrahman Mustapha arrived in the Molaikura community from the Mamanti area, driving a Toyota Vibe vehicle. "Abdulrahman Mustapha visited the area in search of a road leading to Gambouru before residents apprehended him and handed him over to the military due to suspicious behaviour," Umara explained. He noted that Mustapha's motives were unclear, as he met a local boy and asked for directions to Gambouru, but the boy claimed ignorance of the location.
Umara further stated: "I am not sure of his motives. When he arrived, he met a boy and asked for directions to Gambouru, but the boy said he did not know the place." The district head added that Mustapha allegedly tried to persuade the boy to enter his vehicle to help locate a nearby tarred road, but the boy declined, heightening suspicions among residents.
Escalation and Fatal Outcome
The situation escalated when Mustapha was handed over to military personnel for investigation. Umara reported that during the escort to an Army captain's office, Mustapha allegedly attempted to disarm a soldier, leading to the gun discharging. Mustapha was shot outside the community and later died en route to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.

This incident has drawn international attention, with Amnesty International raising concerns on March 24, 2026, over what it described as the "unlawful killing" of Mustapha, which reportedly occurred on March 22 near the Federal High Court in Maiduguri. The organization called on authorities to ensure that any personnel found culpable are brought to justice through a prompt and fair trial.
In response, the Nigerian Army confirmed the incident but suggested that preliminary findings indicate a more complex situation with possible security implications. The Media Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Lt.-Col.
