The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria has raised serious concerns about what they describe as deliberate delays in security responses to attacks on predominantly Christian communities across the country.
Disturbing Security Failures Documented
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, November 25, the Catholic bishops revealed they have received numerous disturbing reports of security forces either arriving late or completely withholding response to attacks in several regions.
The bishops expressed grave concern about repeated brutal attacks on Christian communities, particularly in Northern and middle belt regions, which have resulted in heavy casualties and significant loss of Christian lives.
Evidence of Possible Collusion
The religious leaders highlighted that the pattern of delayed security interventions has created the impression of possible collusion or lack of political will to protect vulnerable communities.
"In some instances, there have been disturbing reports of delayed or withheld security responses, giving the impression of possible collusion or a lack of will to act," the bishops stated in their official communique.
They further detailed how the near-total destruction and occupation of some communities, combined with continued attacks on displaced persons even in camps, has deepened feelings of abandonment and despair among affected populations.
Genocide Allegations and Broader Impact
The bishops acknowledged that such prolonged unbearable conditions have given credibility to allegations of genocide in some quarters, though the Nigerian government has repeatedly rejected these claims.
Importantly, the religious leaders emphasized that Muslims and citizens of diverse ethnic backgrounds have also fallen victim to the same violence, demonstrating their concern extends beyond religious lines to encompass all Nigerians affected by the security crisis.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference has urgently called on the government to investigate the reports of delayed security responses in affected communities, stressing that such investigation is crucial for rebuilding public trust and ensuring adequate protection for all citizens.
