Defence Chief Issues Stern Warning to Terrorist Sympathizers
Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has delivered a forceful admonition to individuals he identified as sympathizers of terrorist organizations, declaring that anyone who provides support or justification for such groups will bear shared accountability for the outcomes of their violent actions.
Zero Tolerance for Terrorist Support
General Musa articulated his position while addressing the ongoing national struggle against insurgency and banditry, emphasizing that no Nigerian citizen should under any circumstances validate or endorse terrorist entities. "Nobody should support terrorists in whatever form. Those guys don't mean well," the defence chief stated unequivocally.
He further elaborated that individuals who engage with criminal organizations for monetary benefit or attempt to rationalize their operations are indirectly contributing to the cycle of violence that has resulted in thousands of fatalities across Nigeria in recent years. "If you think you're trading with them and you're getting money, it's blood money and you're going to account for that," Musa warned during his address.
Criticism of Influential Leaders
The defence chief specifically criticized certain traditional and religious authorities whom he accused of making public statements that appear to encourage or excuse the activities of armed groups responsible for widespread killings, abductions, and assaults across multiple Nigerian states.
While Musa did not explicitly name individuals during his speech, security analysts and observers have widely interpreted his remarks as directed toward controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and other prominent figures who have previously advocated for dialogue or negotiations with bandit factions operating in northern regions.
The Danger of Justifying Violence
Musa cautioned that public commentary that seems to legitimize or soften the public perception of violent organizations could potentially embolden them to persist with their attacks against civilian populations and security forces. "We have some of our traditional rulers and religious leaders that tend to make comments that seem to be encouraging these people to continue to kill people," he observed.
The military leader invoked a powerful proverb to illustrate his point: "They should understand the friend of a thief is a thief." This metaphorical statement underscores the military's position that association with criminal elements implies complicity in their unlawful activities.
Moral Responsibility for Consequences
General Musa emphasized that individuals whose public statements indirectly contribute to the loss of innocent lives would share in the moral burden of those deaths. "Anybody that's killed because of your comment, you'll share in the burden," he declared, highlighting the serious implications of irresponsible rhetoric from influential community figures.
Security Implications of Support Networks
Security authorities have repeatedly cautioned that providing financial assistance, logistical support, or moral encouragement to armed groups fundamentally undermines military operations and prolongs the national security crisis. Musa's latest warning reinforces the armed forces' firm stance that combating terrorism requires not only robust security operations but also responsible public messaging from leaders across all sectors of Nigerian society.
The defence chief's statements come amid intensified military campaigns against terrorist organizations and bandit groups operating in various regions, particularly in northern states where violence has displaced communities and disrupted economic activities. Security experts note that cutting off support networks represents a critical component of comprehensive counterterrorism strategy.
