The explosion was reported to have happened at precisely 11:46 am on Wednesday, December 24, 2025. According to an official incident report, the chain of events began when a woman, during a routine cleaning of her apartment, discovered the grenade. Unsure of what it was, she sought the help of a female soldier, identified as Mohammed, who was living in the same compound.
The woman reportedly presented the device to the soldier, asking if it was still useful or should be thrown away. Tragically, the grenade detonated while being handled, causing immediate and serious injuries.
Investigation Reveals Startling Origin
Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation point to a disturbing origin for the explosive. The report indicates that the hand grenade was brought to the apartment approximately three years earlier by a soldier who was serving in the North East region of Nigeria.
This yet-to-be-identified soldier allegedly left the device in the room of his sister, who resides in the compound where the explosion later occurred. It was this sister who found the grenade during cleaning and brought it out, setting the tragic sequence in motion.
Severe Injuries and Medical Response
The blast caused devastating harm to the victims. Soldier Mohammed suffered a severe injury to her left wrist alongside other bodily wounds. The two children of the woman who presented the grenade were also critically injured in the explosion.
The emergency response saw the female soldier first rushed to the Nagari Allah Private Hospital in Keffi by her sister and co-tenants. Her condition necessitated further transfer, and she was evacuated to the Defence Headquarters Medical Centre located in Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.
She was subsequently referred to Cedarcrest Hospital in Apo, Abuja, where she is currently receiving treatment. Authorities have confirmed that her condition has now stabilised, and she is responding positively to medical care.
