Guinea Dismantles Suspected GSIM Terrorist Network in Nationwide Crackdown
Guinean authorities have launched a decisive nationwide anti-terror operation, successfully dismantling a suspected terrorist network linked to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM). The crackdown resulted in the arrest of multiple foreign and Guinean nationals, marking a significant blow to jihadist activities in the region.
Arrests and Indictments Announced by Public Prosecutor
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Conakry officially announced the arrest and indictment of 11 individuals in April 2025. The detained suspects include a diverse group of nationals: seven Malians, two Nigeriens, one Burkinabe, and one Guinean. Among them, Malian national Fotigui Daou was specifically arrested for alleged membership in a dormant GSIM cell. During interrogations, Daou admitted his involvement in a hostage-for-ransom operation, which authorities confirmed contributed directly to terrorist financing efforts.
Online Radicalization Networks Uncovered
Further investigations revealed the active roles of two Guinean nationals, Ibrahima Sow and Cheick Ibrahima Savane, who were detained for their participation in online radicalization networks. Security forces uncovered several GSIM-affiliated WhatsApp groups with over 500 members, including 38 Guineans. These digital platforms were systematically used to radicalize individuals and coordinate terrorist operations, highlighting the evolving tactics of extremist groups in the Sahel region.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
All suspects now face serious criminal charges, including:
- Complicity in terrorism
- Criminal association
- Financing terrorism
The Prosecutor's Office emphasized that these arrests are part of a broader strategy to combat terrorism, which remains an absolute national priority for Guinea's government.

The arrests come amid rising jihadist activity in the Sahel region, particularly in southern Mali near Guinea's border. Authorities have issued urgent appeals to citizens, urging them to:
