Kyiv Monastery Fire After Russian Attack

Ukraine's historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was engulfed in flames following a major Russian attack overnight into Monday. The assault killed at least four people and wounded more than a dozen in the capital, according to local authorities.

Fire at the Monastery

Images showed flames billowing from the UNESCO-listed complex, which traces its roots back nearly 1,000 years. Firefighters battled the blaze beneath the towers and domes of the Dormition Cathedral. A CNN journalist reported hearing several explosions during the attack, during which Russia launched 611 long-range strike UAVs and 70 missiles, according to Ukraine's Air Force.

By daybreak, firefighters were still working to douse the flames. Ukraine's emergency services said the fire affected 800 square meters of the cathedral roof and released images showing damage to the building.

Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine called for “prayers for the salvation of the shrine from destruction,” calling it “another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity.”

Wider Impact

A separate fire broke out in the National Cultural, Art and Museum Complex, covering 1,000 square meters. At least four people were killed and more than 20 wounded in the attack on Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said about 140,000 households in northern Kyiv lost electricity.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it had carried out strikes on “targets within the defence-industrial complex in the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.”

International Response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged a swift international response ahead of the G7 summit in Évian, France. “This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war,” he wrote on X. “It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries… more pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukraine’s air defense.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attacks and said G7 leaders would discuss increasing pressure on Russia to end the war.

Historical Significance

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, founded in the 11th century, is a major spiritual and cultural center. It was added to the World Heritage in Danger list in 2023 due to the threat of destruction from the Russian offensive. UNESCO describes it as a “masterpiece of Ukrainian art.”

Zelensky slammed the attack as “one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.” First responders extinguished the fires at the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal.

Other Attacks

In Kharkiv, at least five people were killed and five wounded in Russian bombardment, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. The attack came after Zelensky said he and US President Donald Trump discussed ending the war, which began over four years ago. Trump also spoke with Putin on Sunday.

“All Ukrainians have one wish for President Trump: that we may finally achieve peace,” Zelensky wrote on X.
