Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, has strongly defended the international travel of Defence Minister Muhammad Badaru to Dubai despite ongoing security challenges across the country.
Official Response to Travel Concerns
The defence ministry clarified that Minister Badaru is attending the 2025 Dubai International Airshow with full presidential authorization. The delegation includes key military personnel representing Nigeria at this significant global event.
Matawalle's statement came amid public concerns about the absence of several top security officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff General O.O Oluyede, during persistent security challenges nationwide.
Strategic Importance of Dubai Mission
According to the minister, the Dubai Airshow serves as a premier global platform for aerospace, space, and defence industries to foster business growth and showcase innovative technologies.
"This biennial event connects political leaders, innovators, and government officials to exchange proactive ideas that benefit national security," Matawalle explained.
The Nigerian delegation aims to highlight the nation's advancements in defence technology and reinforce Nigeria's commitment to global defence collaborations.
Security Operations Continue Unabated
Matawalle emphasized that Minister Badaru's official engagement abroad does not reduce the government's sensitivity or response capacity to domestic security situations.
"Our combined efforts ensure we continue addressing these challenges effectively," the minister stated, addressing concerns about leadership during security crises.
Regarding the abducted school students, Matawalle reiterated: "I immediately condemned the abduction and called for coordinated security agency efforts for the students' safe return. Our strategies are in place, and we maintain constant communication with relevant authorities."
The minister assured Nigerians that he remains fully operational on the ground, implementing necessary measures while Badaru completes his international assignment.
"We are fortunate to have a two-minister structure in some ministries, allowing operational continuity during official travels," Matawalle noted, confirming that Badaru will actively rejoin security efforts upon his return.
The government maintains that international defence engagements remain crucial for enhancing Nigeria's security capabilities despite domestic challenges.
