NAF Alpha Jet Crashes in Niger State: Pilots Praised for Averting Disaster
Military Jet Crash in Niger: NAF Explains Incident

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has provided details surrounding the crash of one of its Alpha Jet aircraft in Niger State. The incident occurred on Friday, 6 December 2025, shortly after the jet became airborne.

Emergency After Take-Off from Kainji Base

According to an official statement from the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the crash happened during a routine post-inspection functional check flight. The aircraft took off from NAF Base Kainji in Niger State but developed what was described as a critical emergency moments after becoming airborne.

The jet ultimately went down near the community of Karabonde, located in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The NAF confirmed that the flight was a standard check operation, not a combat mission.

Pilots' Heroic Actions Prevent Ground Casualties

In a commendable act, the two pilots on board managed to avert a greater tragedy. The NAF praised the airmen for displaying remarkable composure during the severe in-flight emergency.

The pilots deliberately steered the malfunctioning jet away from populated areas before initiating ejection sequences. This decisive action is credited with preventing potential loss of life and property on the ground.

Both crew members successfully ejected from the aircraft and were reported to be in good health following the incident. They are currently undergoing routine post-ejection medical evaluation as a standard procedure.

Investigation Launched and Leadership Reaction

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry. This board is tasked with thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.

Air Marshal Aneke publicly commended the pilots for their professionalism and quick thinking, which ensured their own survival and protected civilians. The focus now shifts to the technical investigation to determine the root cause of the emergency.

The incident has sparked reactions from Nigerians online, with many expressing relief that the pilots survived. Some social media users raised questions about the age and maintenance of the aircraft fleet, while others highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the region.

This event recalls a previous tragedy in July, when a NAF aircraft crashed in Makurdi, Benue State, during a routine exercise, claiming the lives of two pilots.
