The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has placed the military on maximum alert to forestall any potential attacks during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. This announcement was made on Sunday, 22 December 2025, as the nation prepares for the festive Yuletide period.
Enhanced Security Operations and Manpower Boost
According to the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Michael Onoja, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) are implementing robust and proactive measures in collaboration with other security agencies. Operations have been intensified across identified vulnerable areas nationwide. To bolster these efforts, a significant manpower injection occurred just a day prior, on Saturday, 21 December.
The Nigerian Army formally inducted 3,391 new regular recruits, while the Nigerian Air Force graduated 1,296 airmen and airwomen. This combined intake of 4,687 new personnel is aimed at strengthening the military's operational capacity during this critical period.
Strategic Deployments and Surveillance Measures
Major-General Onoja detailed specific security arrangements. Additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations and major routes. Special forces units and air support elements are on standby, ensuring a rapid response capability to any threat.
Surveillance has been significantly heightened. The military is utilizing aerial monitoring and enhanced intelligence gathering to track the movement and communication of suspected criminal groups. Unit commanders have received directives to:
- Strengthen patrols in their areas of responsibility.
- Establish fortified checkpoints.
- Maintain close collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups, and state security formations.
Call for Public Vigilance and Cooperation
The DHQ emphasized that public cooperation is vital for the success of these security operations. Onoja stated that "citizens' cooperation remains a critical component of national security." He assured Nigerians that all reports provided to security agencies would be treated with urgency and confidentiality.
While urging citizens to remain calm, he also advised them to be vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or persons to the nearest security formation. The Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, extended seasonal greetings, wishing all citizens a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that ensuring the security and stability of the nation is its top priority for a peaceful festive season.
