N320m Raised for Armed Forces Remembrance Day

President Bola Tinubu, alongside other top government officials, has spearheaded a significant fundraising effort for Nigeria's military heroes, with a total of N320 million donated at the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) emblem appeal fund.

Leadership Donations Kickstart Fundraising

The event, held at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, saw President Tinubu make the largest single contribution of N200 million. He emphasized the nation's "sacred duty" to support the families of fallen soldiers and to care for serving personnel operating in dangerous conditions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio contributed N100 million to the fund after being formally presented with the remembrance emblem by the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mrs. Grace Morenike Henry. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced a donation of N20 million, completing the initial N320 million figure.

A Solemn Commitment to Fallen and Serving Heroes

In his address, President Tinubu stated that the annual January 15 observance must remain a solemn occasion for the country to reaffirm its commitment to those who sacrificed their lives for national unity. "As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve," the President declared.

He commended serving troops for their bravery in combating diverse security challenges, including:

  • Terrorism and insurgency
  • Banditry and kidnapping
  • Oil theft and piracy

Tinubu credited their sacrifices for restoring stability to numerous communities across Nigeria.

New Initiatives for Security and Appreciation

The President highlighted gains from his administration's security reforms, pointing to insurgent surrenders, the neutralization of terrorist leaders, and improved joint operations. He revealed a new Defence Ministry programme to reclaim ungoverned spaces by leveraging the expertise of retired military personnel.

A key innovation launched was the "Thank a Soldier" QR code platform. This digital tool allows Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to send direct messages of gratitude and encouragement to troops on the frontlines.

Reaffirming the government's focus on welfare, Tinubu listed ongoing interventions for security personnel, which include:

  1. Upgraded barracks accommodation.
  2. Enhanced operational allowances.
  3. Expanded healthcare services.
  4. Streamlined pension verification processes.

The emblem appeal fund serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and gratitude, underscoring continued support for the military's sacrifices in defending Nigeria's sovereignty and peace.
