In a significant move to strengthen ties with local communities, the Nigerian Navy has officially opened a newly upgraded and fully equipped Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) in Ikaram-Akoko, Ondo State. The commissioning ceremony took place on 24 December 2025, marking a pivotal step in the Navy's community development efforts beyond its maritime security duties.
Modern Healthcare for Akoko North West
The project, located in the Akoko North West Local Council Area, was delivered under the Chief of Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Project (QIP). It aims to transform healthcare access for residents of Ikaram and surrounding communities. The intervention involved a complete renovation and remodelling of an existing block at the health centre.
A key feature of the upgrade is the installation of a 10-kilovolt-ampere (kVA) solar power system to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply. The Navy also provided a suite of new medical and diagnostic equipment to enhance the facility's capabilities.
Leadership Highlights Commitment to National Development
Speaking at the event, Rear Admiral N.C. Ekwom, who represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, emphasized that the project underscores the Navy's dedication to national development. He revealed that the QIP initiative was introduced in 2024 by the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogala (rtd), to support the federal government's objectives.
Ekwom described the health centre as a milestone in the Navy's engagement with host communities. He passionately appealed to residents to take ownership of the facility, ensuring its proper use and maintenance for long-term sustainability.
A Boost for Early Disease Detection
Another senior officer, Rear Admiral Adefemi Kayode, stated that Ikaram was privileged to benefit from the initiative, noting that good health is fundamental to societal progress. He explained that while the Navy secures Nigeria's waters, the CNS also prioritizes projects that directly improve citizens' welfare.
The diagnostic centre is now fitted with modern tools designed for early detection of health issues. The supplied equipment includes:
- ECG machines
- X-ray facilities
- Digital microscopes
- Blood-testing tools for genotype determination
Kayode added that access to these services will help prevent avoidable health challenges, such as sickle cell complications and undiagnosed heart conditions.
Community Royalty Applauds Navy's Gesture
The traditional ruler of Ikaram, Oba Andrew Momodu, the Akala of Ikaram, praised the Nigerian Navy for the intervention. He described the upgraded centre as a beacon of hope that will improve health outcomes for his people and reduce the need for costly referrals to distant hospitals.
This project stands as a concrete example of the Nigerian Navy's expanding role in fostering civil-military relations and contributing to grassroots development in Ondo State and across Nigeria.
