Nigerian Navy Intensifies Crackdown, Extends Operation Sentinel to Combat Oil Theft

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has announced a 90-day extension of Operation Delta Sentinel, a critical maritime security initiative aimed at eradicating large-scale crude oil theft and illegal refining activities across the Niger Delta region. This decision follows a highly successful three-month campaign that led to the recovery of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products valued at over N1 billion.

Operation Delta Sentinel: A Strategic Maritime Security Response

Launched on January 13, 2026, Operation Delta Sentinel was established to strengthen the protection of Nigeria's maritime environment and combat the rampant issue of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta. It replaced the previous Operation Delta Sanity II, reflecting an enhanced operational strategy. The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, emphasized that the extension is intended to sustain operational momentum and drive economic saboteurs out of business, ensuring continued security for the nation's vital oil and gas assets.

Major Busts and Recoveries in Recent Operations

In a significant operation, personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder deployed anti-crude oil theft patrol teams to the Ndoni/Egbema general area of Rivers State. There, they uncovered a major illegal refining site at Umoku, Ndoni, which included numerous dugout pits and locally fabricated refining ovens used for processing stolen crude oil. Assessments revealed that approximately 708,000 litres of illegally refined petroleum products, such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), along with about 310,000 litres of stolen crude oil, were stored in these pits. The estimated value of these products exceeds N1.06 billion for refined items and N288 million for crude oil. Perpetrators fled upon sighting the patrol team, and the products were handled according to standard operational procedures.

Additionally, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny, supported by Nigerian Navy air assets, uncovered and deactivated multiple illegal crude oil storage sites within the Allison Community in Bonny Local Government Area. This operation resulted in the recovery of approximately 231,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, valued at over N215 million, concealed in dugout pits and connected to waterways through improvised distribution systems.

Comprehensive Gains and Maritime Interdictions

Recent operations under Operation Delta Sentinel have reinforced earlier successes recorded between January and March 2026. During that period, over 457,000 litres of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products were recovered, conservatively valued at over N600 million. This was accompanied by the deactivation of numerous illegal refining sites and logistics nodes across the Niger Delta.

Complementing these inland successes, recent maritime interdictions have further amplified the Nigerian Navy's operational impact. Notably, the arrest of three vessels—Motor Tankers MKPODU, WESTAF, and STELIOS K—with over 900 metric tonnes of suspected stolen crude oil, translating to approximately 1.04 million litres and estimated at over N967 million, highlights the effectiveness of the Navy's multi-domain strategy.

Multi-Domain Strategy to Dismantle Oil Theft Networks

The convergence of inland disruption and maritime interdiction underscores a deliberate multi-domain operational strategy aimed at dismantling the entire crude oil theft value chain. By targeting both land-based illegal refining operations and maritime smuggling routes, the Nigerian Navy is working to protect the nation's economic interests and ensure the security of its oil and gas infrastructure. This comprehensive approach is crucial for sustaining Nigeria's economic stability and combating the syndicates involved in these illicit activities.
