NEDC Provides Critical Relief to Boko Haram Victims in Borno
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has undertaken a significant humanitarian effort, donating substantial quantities of food items and building materials to victims affected by recent multiple bomb blasts perpetrated by Boko Haram in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. This initiative is part of the commission's emergency response mandate aimed at alleviating the suffering of citizens following devastating attacks across various local government areas in the state.
Distribution of Essential Supplies
During a presentation on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the NEDC Managing Director, represented by State Coordinator Engr. Mohammed Wasinda, outlined the relief materials provided. The donation includes 2,000 bags and cartons each of rice and spaghetti, along with 2,000 blankets to offer immediate comfort to displaced persons and survivors. Wasinda directed the chairpersons of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area to coordinate the distribution through appropriate state channels, ensuring efficient delivery to those in need.
Support for Reconstruction Efforts
In addition to food aid, the commission has contributed vital building materials to support reconstruction efforts in the affected regions. The donation comprises 1,000 bundles of roofing sheets, 5,000 ceiling boards, 10,000 pieces of timber, 2,000 iron rods, and 8,000 packets of nails. Wasinda emphasized that all items should be handed over to the Borno State Government via the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which will oversee distribution to guarantee that the materials reach the most impacted households.
Cash Assistance for Victims
Beyond material support, the NEDC has verified a list of over 150 victims and survivors of the Maiduguri bombings for cash assistance. According to Wasinda, families of deceased victims will receive ₦50,000 each as funeral support, while injured survivors will be granted ₦30,000 each to aid with medical and personal expenses. This financial aid is designed to provide immediate relief and help individuals rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the attacks.
Extended Aid to Other Affected Areas
The distribution plan extends beyond Maiduguri to cover affected communities in Konduga, Gwoza, and Kukawa local government areas, including Ngoshe, a border community with Cameroon. Items allocated to these regions include 1,800 bags of rice, 1,800 cartons of spaghetti, as well as thousands of mats and wrappers. Distribution will be managed through local government authorities and members of the Borno State House of Assembly to ensure comprehensive coverage and support for all victims.
