New AIG Dankombo Morris Assumes Command at Zone 4 Police Headquarters in Makurdi
Assistant Inspector-General of Police Dankombo Morris has officially taken up his role as the 44th AIG in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, located in Makurdi, Benue State. This significant appointment marks a new chapter in the leadership of the police zone, which oversees law enforcement operations across a critical region.
Rising Death Toll from Mbalom Attack Reaches 17
In a distressing development, the death toll from the recent Mbalom attack has escalated to 17, following the discovery of additional bodies by a dedicated search team. Initially, the Chairman of Gwer Local Government Area, Timothy Adi, reported a figure of nine casualties, but he has not responded to subsequent calls for confirmation. A member of the search team has verified the increased toll, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Residents who fled the community in the wake of the attack remain hesitant to return as of Monday, citing ongoing safety concerns. One resident, Tyolaha, shared with The Guardian that the community had just experienced the first rains of the season, with farming preparations already underway before the violence forced a mass exodus. He urgently appealed to both state and federal governments to take immediate action to facilitate the return of displaced individuals to their farms, rather than confining them to Internally Displaced Persons camps.
Leadership Transition and Professional Background
AIG Dankombo Morris has assumed duty, succeeding Deputy Inspector-General of Police Zachariah Fera Achinyan. According to a statement released by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ayo Oluwaseun Martins, AIG Dankombo is recognized as a highly experienced officer with a distinguished career spanning various operational, investigative, and administrative roles across Nigeria. His appointment is expected to bring renewed focus to security challenges in the zone, including addressing incidents like the Mbalom attack.
The resumption of AIG Dankombo comes at a critical time, as the region grapples with security issues that impact both community safety and agricultural activities. The overlap of his leadership with the aftermath of the Mbalom attack underscores the pressing need for effective policing and government intervention to restore stability and support affected residents.
