Brigadier-General Soyemi Sofoluwe Dies at 80: A Legacy of Service

The Nigerian military and public service community are in mourning following the announcement of the passing of retired Brigadier-General Soyemi Ayodele Sofoluwe. The distinguished officer and former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) died on 20 December 2025 at the age of 80.

A Stellar Military and Educational Career

Born on 14 January 1945, Soyemi Ayodele Sofoluwe was a man of both intellectual and martial prowess. He was a science graduate who also held a Master’s degree in Oceanography and Aqua Sciences from the University of Lagos. He translated this academic foundation into a remarkable military career, rising through the ranks to retire as a Brigadier-General.

His service was defined by pivotal roles in training and educating Nigeria's armed forces. His postings included:

  • Education Officer at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi.
  • Head of Department at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna.
  • Assistant Director, Army Education at the 3rd Division in Rukuba, Jos (1993–1994).
  • Commandant of the Nigerian Military School in Zaria.

Transformative Leadership at the NYSC

Perhaps his most notable national contribution was his tenure as the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from 1994 to 1996. In this role, he worked diligently to reinforce the core mandate of the scheme, focusing on community-driven development and meaningful national service for Nigerian youth.

He was instrumental in elevating Nigeria's standing within international youth service frameworks during his leadership. His approach was remembered for a unique blend of firmness and humanity, guided by principled pragmatism and an unshakable belief that serving the nation was a moral duty.

The Man Behind the Uniform: Integrity and Family

Beyond his official duties, Brigadier-General Sofoluwe was renowned for his unassailable integrity and profound convictions. A devout Christian, he was deeply committed to his family values, earning universal respect from colleagues and subordinates alike. His character cemented his affectionate nickname, "The People’s General."

He is survived by his wife, Colonel (Dr) K. Sofoluwe (rtd.), their children, grandchildren, and a large extended family. The formal announcement of his passing was signed by his wife on behalf of the family on 22 December 2025.

The death of Brigadier-General Soyemi Ayodele Sofoluwe marks the end of an era for a generation of Nigerian officers he mentored and the countless youth corps members who passed through the NYSC under his watch. His legacy of discipline, selfless service, and dedication to nation-building remains a towering example for current and future generations in Nigeria's public and military life.
