Nigeria Debunks Espionage Claims, Says Burkina Faso Aircraft Landing Was Routine
Nigeria Rejects Spy Claims Over Burkina Faso Aircraft

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a strong rebuttal to online allegations suggesting a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft was involved in espionage activities in Burkina Faso. Authorities have labeled the reports as deliberate falsehoods designed to mislead the public and strain diplomatic relations.

Government Statement Debunks False Narrative

In a statement released on December 15, 2025, and reported by Vanguard, the government categorically denied all claims that the aircraft was on a covert mission. The statement, titled “False Claims Debunked as Facts Emerge on Nigerian Military Aircraft Ferry Flight and Precautionary Landing in Burkina Faso,” provided a detailed account of the flight's legitimate purpose.

Officials clarified that the aircraft was on a duly approved ferry flight to Portugal for scheduled depot maintenance. This is described as a standard procedure in the operational lifecycle of military transport aircraft. The flight possessed all necessary documentation and international clearances, including provisions for diversion if required.

Precautionary Landing for Safety, Not Interception

The government explained that the aircraft made a precautionary landing in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, strictly on safety grounds. This action was taken in full compliance with established aviation procedures.

“At no time was the aircraft intercepted, forced to land, or found operating without authorisation,” the statement emphasized. It further rejected any suggestions of airspace violation or hostile intent, calling such narratives fabrications meant to inflame public sentiment.

Addressing the nature of the personnel on board, the statement denied they were intelligence officers. The 11 individuals were identified as standard aircrew and mission-support officers engaged in a legitimate military air movement. The government asserted the aircraft was not equipped with any surveillance or data-collection systems.

Diplomatic Channels Active, Crew Safe

Contrary to online speculation about the crew's status, officials confirmed that interactions with Burkinabe authorities have remained professional. The personnel are safe, have maintained contact with their families, and have received cordial treatment.

The government also noted that no official announcement had been made regarding the crew's release, dismissing such reports as premature. Matters concerning the aircraft and its personnel are being handled through the appropriate diplomatic channels by relevant ministries and agencies.

The statement concluded with a warning about the dangers of misinformation, urging Nigerians to rely on verified sources. It stressed that while democratic scrutiny is welcome, the spread of false narratives could undermine public trust, damage national unity, and strain Nigeria’s regional relations.
