Nigeria and Türkiye Seal Strategic Defence Pact at Antalya Diplomacy Forum
In a significant move to bolster bilateral defence ties, Nigeria and Türkiye have formalized a series of strategic agreements at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026. The pact, which focuses on training, technology transfer, and maritime cooperation, marks a pivotal step in deepening military collaboration between the two nations.
High-Level Talks and Delegation Details
The agreements were reached during high-level discussions between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, and his Turkish counterpart. The Nigerian delegation included senior military and diplomatic officials, such as the Chief of the Air Staff, representatives from the Nigerian Embassy, and defence advisers. Both countries reaffirmed their longstanding relationship and outlined practical measures to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.
Comprehensive Training and Capacity Development
Central to the defence pact is a comprehensive training and capacity development programme for the Nigerian armed forces. Türkiye will provide structured training in several critical areas, including:
- Special operations and counterterrorism tactics
- Intelligence integration and counter-drone operations
- Counter-improvised explosive device (IED) operations
- United Nations pre-deployment exercises
An initial batch of Nigerian personnel is expected to be deployed to Türkiye for immediate training, with provisions for Turkish language instruction and field exercises. Additionally, both sides agreed to establish a major military training facility in Nigeria, with plans for a temporary site and a permanent coastal centre of excellence.
Aviation and Naval Cooperation
In the aviation sector, commitments were made to strengthen maintenance systems, logistics supply chains, and training to boost operational readiness. This includes potential acquisition and support for helicopters and unmanned systems. Naval cooperation also featured prominently, with Nigerian naval officials set to engage their Turkish counterparts to evaluate suitable platforms and expand maritime training, aiming to improve domain awareness in Nigeria’s coastal regions.
Phased Implementation and Strategic Outcomes
Both countries agreed on a phased implementation plan, with Nigeria expected to provide land, preferably in coastal areas, for the development of training and operational facilities. Describing the outcome as a significant milestone, Minister Musa emphasized that the agreements would deliver measurable improvements in national security and reinforce ongoing defence reforms. This defence pact underscores a shared commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s defence capabilities and fostering regional stability through enhanced bilateral cooperation.
