The Nigerian Army has stepped up efforts to enhance combat efficiency and operational performance. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Waidi Shaibu has directed commanders across the country to adopt accountability, professionalism, and mission-focused leadership in addressing the nation's security challenges.
COAS Speaks at Bi-Annual Conference
Speaking at the conclusion of the Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja, Shaibu described the gathering as a strategic platform for reviewing ongoing operations and developing fresh strategies against emerging security threats. The conference, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites in Asokoro, brought together senior military officers and security stakeholders to assess operational strategies, troop readiness, and evolving defense priorities.
Commitment to Modernization
Shaibu emphasized that the Army remains dedicated to building a more agile and technologically advanced force capable of responding swiftly to modern warfare and asymmetric threats. He revealed that the military has expanded its operational capabilities by acquiring additional tactical drones and modifying aviation platforms for combat support missions. According to him, these upgraded assets have improved intelligence gathering, target precision, troop mobility, and casualty evacuation during operations.
Focus on Personnel Development
The COAS also highlighted ongoing investments in personnel development, noting that recruitment, advanced military training, and leadership programs are being strengthened to improve professionalism and institutional performance across the Army. Reaffirming his "soldier-first" policy, Shaibu urged commanders to prioritize troop welfare, stressing that motivated personnel are central to operational success. He called for improved attention to soldiers' entitlements, healthcare, education, and family welfare support systems.
Call for Implementation
He further challenged military leaders to ensure that resolutions reached during the conference translate into visible operational gains on the field, insisting that implementation remains the true measure of success. Shaibu also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with top defense and security officials, for their continued collaboration in strengthening national security efforts.
Conference Highlights
The conference concluded with the presentation of commendation plaques to senior officers who completed their tours of duty and the unveiling of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre insignia.
