The Odua People's Assembly (OPA) has strongly criticized retired Nigerian Army General Ishola Williams for his recent call to remove National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu from office. In a statement released on Tuesday, the group described Williams' remarks as irresponsible and counterproductive, arguing that they lack factual support and could undermine national security efforts.
Williams' Controversial Interview on Channels Television
During an interview aired on Channels Television on March 15, 2026, General Ishola Williams advocated for a major overhaul of Nigeria's security leadership, specifically urging the dismissal of NSA Nuhu Ribadu. Williams' comments sparked immediate backlash from various quarters, with the OPA leading the charge in defending Ribadu's tenure.
OPA's Response: Emotional Rhetoric vs. Evidence-Based Criticism
In a detailed statement issued by its Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, the OPA accused Williams of being driven by emotion rather than evidence. The group warned that such rhetoric promotes a culture of "permanent pessimism," which could erode public confidence in security institutions and demoralize personnel working to protect the country.
Kayode emphasized, "His assertions lack factual support and are driven more by emotional manipulation than by evidence-based reasoning. Such rhetoric contributes to a culture of 'permanent pessimism' that undermines the morale of our security forces and the integrity of our national institutions."

The OPA highlighted the importance of distinguishing between constructive and irresponsible criticism. According to the group, constructive criticism focuses on behavior and offers actionable solutions, whereas irresponsible criticism targets character without evidence. Kayode noted, "Irresponsible criticism, as exemplified by Williams' comments, is characterised by a lack of evidence and a destructive intent."
He added that Williams' approach not only tarnishes the reputation of dedicated public servants but also distracts from the need for constructive dialogue and collaborative solutions to Nigeria's security challenges.
Defending Ribadu's Track Record and Initiatives
The OPA pointed to Nuhu Ribadu's proactive approach to modern security challenges as evidence of his competence. The group cited initiatives such as the National Forest Guard programme, which reflects Ribadu's commitment to innovative strategies addressing multifaceted security threats.
Kayode stated, "His appointment has been met with debates regarding his suitability; however, it is essential to acknowledge his proactive approach to modern security challenges, including the establishment of the National Forest Guard program."
The OPA also highlighted Ribadu's previous role as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he earned recognition for his anti-corruption efforts. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership, Ribadu has been praised for his effectiveness in combating banditry and terrorism, as well as his ability to coordinate security forces and solve criminal cases.
