Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly commended the officers and soldiers of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army for their steadfast role in maintaining peace and security across the state.
A Celebration of Military Tradition and Camaraderie
The governor's praise was delivered at the Combined 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) for the Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army, Nigerian Army Engineers, and 9 Brigade Nigerian Army. The event took place at the 9 Brigade Parade Ground, TA Lagbaja Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Toyin Akinmade Ayinde, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted WASA as a cherished cultural tradition inherited from the West African Frontier Force era. He described it as a vital platform for fostering unity and esprit de corps among military personnel and their families.
"This event provides a well-deserved opportunity for our dedicated troops to unwind and celebrate their yearly achievements with their loved ones," the governor's representative stated.
Reaffirming Support for Security Operations
Governor Sanwo-Olu used the occasion to reaffirm the Lagos State Government's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. He emphasized that this support is crucial for more effective operations, particularly under the joint security initiative known as Operation MESA.
He acknowledged that the troops of the 81 Division have been actively engaged in numerous operations, training, and internal security duties throughout the year, much like their counterparts nationwide. The governor expressed deep appreciation for the fruitful partnership with the Army, which he said has significantly boosted peace and security, thereby creating an environment conducive to economic growth in Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu also extended gratitude to President and Commander-in-Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Armed Forces under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which has empowered the Army to better fulfill its constitutional duties.
Army Leadership Highlights Year's Achievements
In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, echoed the significance of WASA as a year-end tradition. He commended the Division's personnel for their dedication and hard work over the past twelve months.
Major General Mijinyawa outlined the Division's key accomplishments for 2025, including:
- The successful execution of all training activities in the Nigerian Army Training Directive.
- Hosting four major Army Headquarters-level events.
- A swift and professional deployment of troops to support the Republic of Benin in December 2025, following directives from Army Headquarters and in line with ECOWAS protocols.
The GOC also thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his leadership and for approving essential resources for the Division's activities.
The memorable event was graced by senior serving and retired military officers, heads of security agencies, industry leaders, traditional rulers, and other distinguished guests. Highlights included:
- Award presentations to outstanding soldiers.
- Exhibitions of Nigerian cultural cuisine and attire.
- Cultural performances, comedy, and a tug-of-war competition.
- The symbolic lowering of the National Flag and lighting of the bonfire to mark the event's conclusion.
