Teenagers' Flask Bomb Plot Foiled at Borno Hospital, 23 Killed in Gate Blast

In a chilling incident at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State, three teenagers allegedly attempted to carry out a devastating bombing using explosives concealed within a food flask. The plot was intercepted by vigilant security operatives at the hospital's entrance, but the ensuing explosions resulted in significant casualties, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.

Details of the Attack and Interception

According to fresh reports, the suspects, described as unkempt teenagers, arrived at the hospital on March 16 in a tricycle, commonly known as Keke Napep. They posed as visitors bringing meals to patients, with the explosives hidden in a food flask. Their target was the main hospital complex, which could have led to one of the most catastrophic attacks on patients and visitors in recent memory. However, security personnel denied them entry, leading to explosions at the hospital gate.

The attack claimed the lives of at least 23 people and left 108 others with varying degrees of injuries. A security personnel at the hospital, Ali Musa, provided a firsthand account of the events. He stated that the hospital had tightened security following a prior bomb blast at a nearby post office. At the time of the incident, only two officers were on duty, as others had gone to break their fast during Ramadan.

Security Personnel's Account and Aftermath

Musa recounted that the suspects approached at high speed, which raised immediate suspicion. "Normally, vehicles slow down for checks, but they drove in recklessly. I stopped them and asked them to reverse. They hesitated at first but eventually complied, staring at me in a disturbing manner," he said. During the reversal, one of the suspects threw the flask at Musa, who kicked it away. Moments later, it exploded, causing him to fall and injure his hand. A second explosion followed shortly after, injuring his colleague and others nearby.

A shop owner in the area, speaking anonymously, confirmed the account, emphasizing that the attackers intended to cause maximum destruction within the hospital premises. In a related development, a separate explosion occurred later that evening at the Monday Market, believed to have been carried out by another suicide bomber using an explosive device.

Government Response and Security Measures

In response to the rising wave of violence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed security chiefs to relocate to Borno State. Following this directive, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, arrived in Maiduguri on March 18 to oversee security operations and address the escalating threats.

This incident underscores the persistent security risks in Borno State and the critical role of frontline security personnel in preventing potential mass casualties. The use of everyday items like food flasks to conceal explosives highlights the evolving tactics of attackers, necessitating heightened vigilance and improved security protocols at public facilities.
