Terrorists Kill Top Nigerian Army General, 17 Soldiers in Coordinated Borno Attacks

In a devastating series of coordinated strikes, suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have killed Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and at least 17 other soldiers in Borno state. The attacks targeted multiple military formations, including the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, as well as locations in Ngamdu and Pulka, resulting in significant casualties and damage to military assets.

Details of the Deadly Assault

The assaults began in the early hours of Thursday, with insurgents storming the bases using heavy gunfire and explosives. Local sources reported that the attacks lasted several hours, causing widespread panic among residents. In Benisheikh, the assault commenced around 1am, leading to the deaths of the brigade commander, his second-in-command, the Imam of the Brigade, and several officers and soldiers. Additionally, several vehicles, including commercial trucks, were set ablaze, and travelers caught in the violence suffered casualties.

Coordinated Strategy and Military Response

Accounts suggest the attacks were carefully synchronized to overstretch troops and block reinforcements. Insurgents launched an earlier assault around 10:30pm on Wednesday in Pulka and nearby Bakin Ruwa, overrunning a military base and destroying equipment. The Defence Headquarters confirmed the incident, with Major-General Michael Onoja stating that troops responded with exceptional courage and superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat. However, the military acknowledged losses, honoring the fallen soldiers for their heroism and sacrifice.
