His educational journey began in Sokoto State before he proceeded to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria. He entered the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army in 1991 after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree.
His career is marked by a series of strategic postings and professional courses, both within Nigeria and internationally, including at the International College of Defence Studies of the National Defence University. Key roles in his early service included:
- General Staff Officer 1 (Training/Operations) at Headquarters 81 Division.
- Commanding Officer of 73 Battalion.
- Assistant Director for Operational Requirements at the Department of Army Policy and Plans.
Musa's operational command profile expanded significantly in 2019 when he held three pivotal positions concurrently: Deputy Chief of Staff (Training/Operations) at the Infantry Centre and Corps; Commander of Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole; and Commander of Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin.
