Tinubu Announces Sweeping Security Measures for Plateau State
President Bola Tinubu has made a solemn vow to end the recurring cycle of deadly violence in Plateau State, declaring during a visit to Jos that his administration will implement decisive measures to prevent further tragedies. The President expressed profound sympathy for victims and community leaders affected by recent attacks, emphasizing that while no financial compensation can replace lost lives, the government is committed to delivering justice and providing meaningful relief.
Major Surveillance Initiative Unveiled
In a significant policy announcement, President Tinubu directed the immediate installation of over 5,000 surveillance cameras across the city of Jos. This technology-driven initiative aims to strengthen intelligence gathering capabilities and support real-time responses by security agencies. According to the President, this extensive camera network will enable law enforcement to swiftly identify and track criminal elements operating in the area.
"This experience will not repeat itself," Tinubu stated firmly, underscoring his administration's determination to restore lasting peace to Plateau State. He stressed that leadership must be anchored on principles of peace and prosperity rather than grief and division, reminding those present that "we were elected on the promise of peace and prosperity, not to create widows and widowers, but to build a future of hope for all."
Enhanced Security Operations and Humanitarian Response
Beyond the surveillance infrastructure, President Tinubu ordered security agencies to intensify their operations with specific instructions to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the recent attacks. "You must unearth and find the perpetrators," he charged security officials present during his visit, signaling a shift from reactive condolences to proactive enforcement.
To address the humanitarian consequences of the violence, the President tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with conducting a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of victims and losses. This assessment will facilitate targeted interventions and relief efforts for affected families, though Tinubu acknowledged that "there is nothing I can give you, whether in billions, that can replace the lives lost."
Inclusive Governance Approach
President Tinubu further directed the expansion of Plateau State's peace and security committee to accommodate more stakeholders, highlighting the importance of inclusiveness in resolving longstanding communal tensions. Reflecting on his earlier experiences in Jos, the President described the city as once a symbol of unity and political harmony, urging local leaders to reject division and return to the path of collective progress.
"Jos was a place of peace and hospitality. We must rebuild that legacy," he said, calling for a renewed commitment to the values that previously defined the region. Though his visit was brief due to logistical constraints, the President's message clearly outlined a multi-faceted approach combining technology, enhanced security operations, and inclusive governance to secure Plateau State.
The Federal Government's comprehensive response represents a significant escalation in efforts to address security challenges in the region, moving beyond traditional methods to incorporate advanced surveillance technology while maintaining focus on humanitarian needs and community engagement.
