Army Arrests 3 Arson Suspects in Taraba, Averts Fresh Communal Violence
Troops Arrest 3 Suspected Arsonists in Taraba

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully prevented a fresh outbreak of violence in Taraba State with the arrest of three suspected arsonists in Karim Town. The swift military intervention is believed to have averted a dangerous escalation of existing communal tensions in the area.

Swift Military Response Thwarts Destructive Plot

According to a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, by Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 6 Brigade, the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of that same day. The individuals, identified as Bitrus Ishaya, Mamman Ibrahim, and Emmanuel Adi, were intercepted by troops at the scene shortly after they had set a house ablaze. The targeted property belonged to a resident of the Wurkun community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area.

False Identities and Contradictory Stories Unravel

Preliminary investigations quickly cast doubt on the suspects' accounts of themselves. Bitrus Ishaya and Mamman Ibrahim, who hail from the Wudumpi area, falsely claimed to be members of the Taraba Marshal security outfit but could not provide any official identification to support their claim.

Similarly, Emmanuel Adi, from the Step 2 area, presented himself as a vigilante operative. However, his statements during initial questioning were inconsistent and raised significant suspicion. The combination of their contradictory narratives and their presence at the active crime scene led to their immediate arrest by the vigilant troops.

A Deliberate Attempt to Fuel Crisis

The military authorities stated that the arson attack was a calculated act intended to exploit the already fragile security situation in parts of Karim Lamido LGA. The region has recently witnessed a renewed outbreak of clashes between local communities, heightening security concerns.

The proactive response by troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) ensured the isolated incident did not spiral into a wider communal conflict. The suspects are currently held in military custody as investigations intensify to uncover their true motives, identities, and any potential links to criminal networks operating under the guise of community security.

Leadership Commends Troops, Issues Stern Warning

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, the Commander of 6 Brigade, commended the troops for their professionalism and vigilance. He reaffirmed the Brigade's unwavering commitment to protecting peace and stability across Taraba State.

The General issued a stern warning, stating that anyone attempting to ignite violence, destabilize communities, or fuel communal tensions will be decisively dealt with according to the law. He further called on residents to remain calm, cooperate fully with security agencies, and report any suspicious movements or activities to support the ongoing peace efforts under Operation Peace Shield.
