Nigerian Military Thwarts Coordinated ISWAP Assaults Across Borno State
The Nigerian military has demonstrated remarkable operational effectiveness by successfully repelling coordinated terrorist attacks launched by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters against multiple strategic locations in Borno State. According to official statements released on March 17, 2026, troops from the Joint Task Force (North East), operating under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), decisively countered assaults targeting military positions at Njimtilo, Baga, Buratai, and Damboa.
Desperate Terrorist Offensive Meets Overwhelming Response
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed that the attacks occurred during the early hours of Monday, March 16, 2026. The terrorist elements mounted their assaults from multiple directions in what military officials described as a desperate attempt to gain propaganda advantage and potentially overrun established military positions.
The engagements resulted in significant terrorist casualties, including the neutralization of a key ISWAP leader who had spearheaded the assault on Buratai. Many other fighters sustained injuries as they fled along withdrawal routes, with troops maintaining firm control of all contested locations throughout the intense firefights.
Tactical Superiority and Coordinated Defense
At Ajiri Cross, located ahead of Njimtilo, terrorists attempted to infiltrate positions held by Sector 1 troops. However, vigilant military personnel had anticipated such moves and established deliberate offensive-defensive postures. The attempted infiltration was swiftly detected and decisively engaged, with coordinated firepower and tactical maneuvers designed to disrupt attackers and cut off their withdrawal routes.
Similar desperate attacks at Baga, Buratai, and Damboa encountered determined resistance as troops brought superior firepower to bear against the advancing terrorist elements. The ground engagements received crucial reinforcement from timely close air support provided by the Air Component and Nigerian Army Aviation, whose precision strikes effectively disrupted terrorist assault formations and compounded their losses during attempted withdrawals.
Significant Weapons Recovery and Exploitation Operations
Following the successful defense of military positions, troops conducted extensive exploitation operations around Baga, extending their reach to Korochara and Garin Giwa ahead of the Gidan Kaje general area. These operations yielded substantial recoveries of enemy weapons and equipment, including:
- 3 PKT machine guns
- 7 AK-47 rifles
- 206 rounds of PKT ammunition
- 418 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition
- 7 AK-47 magazines
- 3 AK-74 magazines
- 3 RPG bombs
Additional recovered items included 2 camel bags, 3 head warmers, 1 blanket, 1 magazine carrier, and 1 liter of engine oil. Troops also destroyed 3 motorcycles used by the terrorists during their operations. The exploitation operations resulted in the recovery of 7 terrorist corpses, with evidence indicating that the fleeing militants had buried another 20 bodies in shallow graves.
Growing Terrorist Desperation Under Sustained Pressure
Military officials emphasized that these failed attacks demonstrate the growing desperation of terrorist elements operating under sustained operational pressure from OPHK forces across the theater of operations. The successive defeats inflicted on ISWAP fighters have significantly constrained their freedom of action and disrupted attempts to create false propaganda narratives about their operational capabilities.
Despite the intensity of engagements that resulted in equipment damage and some wounded personnel, troops maintained high morale and continued to dominate the operational environment through superior tactical coordination, decisive firepower application, and sustained offensive operations against terrorist enclaves and logistics corridors.
Military Reassurance and Public Vigilance
Operation HADIN KAI leadership has reassured the public that all affected locations remain firmly under military control and that the Joint Task Force maintains full commitment and capability to decisively defeat terrorist elements across Nigeria's North East region. Military authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and disregard disinformation or fake reports aimed at undermining ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
The successful defense operations highlight the Nigerian military's evolving tactical proficiency and operational readiness in confronting terrorist threats, while simultaneously demonstrating the increasing pressure being applied against insurgent groups operating in the region.
