Governor Zulum Declares Worst Days of Boko Haram Insurgency Over in Borno State
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has officially declared that the worst days of the Boko Haram insurgency, which has plagued the region for approximately 17 years, are now over. This announcement was made during a state-wide broadcast from the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday evening, following the successful flushing out of terrorists from key strongholds such as the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
Reflection on Security and Resilience
In his address, Governor Zulum called for solemn reflection and resolute unity among affected communities. He acknowledged the recent resurgence of insecurity in parts of the state over the past few weeks as deeply concerning but assured citizens that the overall security environment remains under control. As the Chief Security Officer, Zulum emphasized his commitment to protecting lives and property through coordinated efforts.
He highlighted that over the past seven years, the state government has worked tirelessly to restore peace and prosperity, rebuild infrastructure, and foster hope and resilience among communities devastated by the long-standing conflict. Through consultations, collective planning, and strong support from security agencies and the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), significant progress has been achieved, with divine assistance playing a crucial role.
Addressing Recent Attacks and Future Challenges
Regarding the recent spike in attacks, Zulum clarified that a decrease in past incidents does not signal the end of the insurgency. He stressed that leadership is acutely aware of the need to address the root causes of the violence permanently. The governor attributed the recent criminal activities to sustained and aggressive military operations that have dislodged terrorists, forcing them to flee and infiltrate communities.
However, Zulum reassured the public that the worst days are over, with a robust and coordinated response already in motion to counter any threats. He warned that cowardly elements seeking to disturb peace will find no sanctuary in Borno State, and the government will deal decisively with any resurgence of violence targeting lives and property.
Collective Effort and Community Collaboration
Zulum emphasized that the fight against insurgency is not solely the responsibility of the military but a collective effort requiring close collaboration with security forces. He urged citizens to provide vital information through their eyes and ears, underscoring the importance of community vigilance in maintaining security.
The governor extended his deepest sympathies to the families of gallant troops, security personnel, and volunteer forces who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. He also expressed solidarity with civilians whose lives have been disrupted, praising their resilience as the bedrock of the state and highlighting the power of unified prayer as an unassailable weapon against enemies.
Warning to Collaborators and Appreciation for Support
Zulum issued a stern warning to individuals or groups aiding or collaborating with criminals, such as providing information, shelter, or logistical support. He labeled them as enemies of the state, vowing that they will be hunted down and face the full wrath of the law for betraying collective peace.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for releasing necessary funding to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and other military operations, noting that this support is vital for sustaining ongoing efforts. Zulum also appreciated Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima for his sympathy visit following a recent incident that claimed 23 lives.
Political Stability and Future Leadership
As the 2027 general elections approach, Zulum called on political actors to align their interests with the security realities of Borno State, including ongoing threats from insurgent groups and the need for community stability. He urged aspirants and supporters to prioritize the state's greater interests over personal ambitions, warning against elements seeking to exploit the security situation for political instability.
Reflecting on his tenure since 2019, Zulum asserted his fairness, justice, and inclusivity in dealings with the political class, emphasizing his loyalty to the Vice President. He called on citizens to pray fervently for a worthy successor, reminding them that power belongs to God and is granted according to His will.
Religious Unity and Vigilance
As Ramadan nears its end, Zulum encouraged both Christians and Muslims to intensify prayers for peace, unity, and stability in Borno State and Nigeria. He urged residents to be more vigilant, especially during gatherings to break fast, by identifying strangers, reporting suspicious movements to security agencies, and taking necessary precautions to safeguard their communities.
