Senate President Godswill Akpabio has made a solemn pledge to provide automatic employment for two sons of his late police escort, Deputy Superintendent of Police Hussani Ibrahim. The officer tragically lost his life in a fatal road accident involving a petrol tanker.
A Tragic Accident on the Expressway
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 21, along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. DSP Hussani Ibrahim, who served as a dispatch rider in Akpabio's security convoy, was killed when a petrol tanker rammed into the convoy. The Senate President formally announced the officer's passing to his colleagues on Tuesday, December 23, during a plenary session at the National Assembly.
Akpabio provided harrowing details of the event, which happened in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The convoy was transporting him from the airport after he attended a chieftaincy conferment ceremony for Senator AbdulAzeez Yari and Seyi Tinubu. "Unfortunately, my dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver, and his head was shattered," Akpabio told the Senate. "We just buried him 15 minutes ago in Kogi State. He left two wives and four children."
A Personal Gesture of Support
Moved by the officer's sacrifice, the Senate President immediately announced a supportive measure for the bereaved family. He appealed to all heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government to grant automatic employment to the children of the late rider.
Akpabio made a personal guarantee, stating, "By the grace of God, I’m recommending two of his senior children for employment immediately in any parastatals that may wish to, otherwise I’ll employ them personally in any of my private concerns." He emphasized that this gesture was to honour Ibrahim's years of dedicated and disciplined service to the nation.
Tributes to a Courageous Officer
In his address, Akpabio paid glowing tribute to DSP Hussani Ibrahim, describing him as a courageous, fearless, and daring professional. He highlighted the officer's unwavering commitment to duty, which ultimately cost him his life.
"Your late father understood the value of work and service. He devoted himself to it," Akpabio said, addressing the bereaved family. "Unfortunately, instead of earning a laurel for the devotion, he earned death. But it is death that is not in vain. It is death that testifies to his legacy of service."
The Senate President extended his condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the Inspector-General of Police, and the entire Nigeria Police Force. He prayed for God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and for the acceptance of the officer's soul.
This tragic event underscores the dangers faced by security personnel on Nigerian roads and has prompted a significant personal intervention from one of the nation's highest-ranking officials to support a family left behind.
