The Nigerian Army has successfully recovered the remains of two of its personnel who were tragically killed in April 2022 while traveling to Imo State for their traditional wedding ceremony. This was confirmed by security analyst Zagazola.
Background of the Incident
Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew were abducted and murdered by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of Imo State. The couple had been en route to Gloria's hometown to celebrate their traditional wedding, a journey that should have marked a joyous occasion in their lives.
Linus, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had dedicated many years to serving the nation, while Gloria was still in active service. At the time, Gloria was stationed in Sokoto, and Linus resided in Makurdi. Their abduction and brutal killing shocked the nation and left their families in anguish.
Recovery Operation
After nearly four years of uncertainty, hope, and relentless efforts, troops from the 82 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a clearance and search operation on April 24, 2026, in the same area where the tragic event occurred. Security sources revealed that the operation was based on the latest intelligence aimed at locating the remains or gravesites of the deceased personnel.
As the troops advanced toward the suspected locations, they came under heavy fire from IPOB armed elements. The assailants attempted to halt the operation through an ambush and later a regrouped assault. However, the soldiers remained resolute, fighting through multiple attacks and forcing the attackers to retreat.
Undeterred, the troops continued their search and eventually discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were carefully excavated, and the remains were recovered for forensic examination. Military sources stated that efforts are now underway to contact the families of the deceased for DNA verification to ensure proper identification before final burial rites.
Commitment to Honoring the Fallen
The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the fallen personnel receive a befitting burial with full military honors. This final tribute is a testament to their service, sacrifice, and the shared dream they represented. The recovery of their remains brings a measure of closure to a painful chapter, allowing their families and the nation to honor their memory appropriately.
